Toy Story 4 continues Pixar’s much loved series almost a decade after the release of Toy Story 3. Can you believe that! Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) is as loveable as ever and continues to take his role of taking care of his ‘kid’ very seriously, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie.

So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft project from kindergarten, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” (hilariously so) and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky just why it is a privilege to have kid to take care of. But when Bonnie takes the whole toy gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts) and explains why she was missing in Toy Story 3.

After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road is really refreshing and great for this generation to see a strong female lead.

There are new characters this year which bring many laughs, except for the freaky puppet looking side kicks to Gaby Gaby, the lonely doll at the antique store. My almost 5 year old was terrified of these characters and spent a third of the movie with his hands over his years and burrowed into my lap.

My 8 and 10 year olds loved it and even though Toy Story is new to them, older teens and young adults will love the filmmakers’ continued commitment to honouring these characters.

The overall message is a universal one and consistent through the generations and that is about the characters quest to love and be loved and that selfless love and belonging unites us all.

4 Stars (only lost a star because of the scary parts)
